José Sebourne was born in Costa Rica. At the age of ten he immigrated with his family to the United States. He studied watercolor at the University of Bridgeport, CT, and earned a BA and teaching certification from Temple University’s Tyler School of Art and Architecture, Philadelphia, at its former Elkins Park campus.
Sebourne has exhibited his work in galleries and museums including Dizyners Gallery, Philadelphia City Hall, and Rosenfeld Gallery, Philadelphia; Philip and Muriel Berman Museum of Art at Ursinus College, Collegeville, PA; Hershey Museum, PA; and the State Museum of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg. He exhibited in the annual juried show of the American Watercolor Society, New York City, which traveled to nine venues in the United States, including Ogunquit Museum of American Art, ME, and Tullahoma Fine Arts Center, TN.
In 2004, Sebourne was commissioned by the University of Pennsylvania to produce three awards to be presented to two government leaders (governor and legislator) and a physician for their support for the fight against HIV/AIDS. His design was well received, with the university choosing to use in subsequent years.
