José Omar Torres

José Omar Torres López was born in Matanzas, Cuba, and is known for his painting, engraving, and drawing. He has served as the director of the Taller Experimental de Gráfica (Experimental Graphics Workshop), Havana, Cuba. He studied at the Escuela Nacional de Arte, Havana; and focused on art history at Universidad de la Habana and engraving at the Instituto Superior de Arte, Havana.

He exhibited his work at institutions including Galería L and Hotel Ambos Mundos Hotel, Havana; Galería de Arte INAC at Plaza de Francia,  Panama City, Panama; International Print Biennale Cracow 1976,Krakow, Poland; Fourth Havana Biennial in the Museo de Arte Colonial; Maison de la Culture du Lamentin, Fort de France, Martinique; Feria Internacional de Arte in the World Trade Center, Mexico City; and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Washington, DC. His works can be found in the Biblioteca Nacional José Martí and Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, Havana; Lehigh University Art Galleries, Bethlehem, PA; and the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Havana.

He won second-prize at the II Salón Provincial de Profesores e Instructores de Artes Plásticas at the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes and third prize in lithography in the Segundo Salón Nacional de Grabados at Galería Amelia Peláez, Havana, among other honors. Torres was an artist-in-residence at Brandywine Workshop and Archives, Philadelphia.
